Yipeng Lantern (Lanna lantern)

            The lantern is a lamp that is made of paper for lighting.Lanna people used it, but it was not popular. And the lanterns were only used in palaces and rich people homes because the gas was very difficult to find.

            Before it became a lantern in the present sense they ware made by Mr.Singkaew Manophet, who makes Lanterns and Pendants(tung). Mr.Singkaew said “A long time, the farmers went to the field, the wind blew off the lantern and the farmers used a basket to cover so the wind didn’t put out the lamp even when the wind blew very hard. Later they covered the basket (mad of wood) with the paper. They became to be called lanterns”

            When the temple has any ceremony, the villagers will make lanterns to offer to the monks. Every year, there is a competition to make many kinds of lanterns. It blessing a new house or wedding ceremony. Mr.Singkeaw told that “the old people like to hang lanterns on the eaves to worship to the king of heaven to prevent the house being unhappy and get out of the danger.

            Why do lanna people make the lanterns? Because the believe making the lanterns to worship Buddha, to support their next lives, to be born in a rich family, to have a beautiful body, to be wealthy and for prosperity for the house’s owner.
